After one hundred years of his death, the ideas and the work of Nietzsche continue appealing and stimulating us. But is Nietzsche really compatible with a democratic culture and society? Some of the most commune topics of the antidemocratic lectures of his work are examined in this paper in order to offer a positive answer to this question. Of course Nietzsche is not free of criticisms, but taking note of his notions of criticism, perspectivism, vitalism, etc., becomes possible to retrieve a Nietzsche with human face
A Framework for a Robot's Emotion Engine
An Emotions Engine is a modelling and a simplification of the Brain circuitry that generate emotions. It should produce a variety of responses including rapid reaction-like emotions as well as slower moods. We introduce such an engine and then propose a framework for its translated equivalent for a robot. We then define key issues that need addressing and provide guidelines via the framework, for its implementation onto an actual robotâs Emotions Engine
Ultrasonic imaging of textured alumina
Ultrasonic images representing the bulk attenuation and velocity of a set of alumina samples were obtained by a pulse-echo contact scanning technique. The samples were taken from larger bodies that were chemically similar but were processed by extrusion or isostatic processing. The crack growth resistance and fracture toughness of the larger bodies were found to vary with processing method and test orientation. The results presented here demonstrate that differences in texture that contribute to variations in structural performance can be revealed by analytic ultrasonic techniques
Mean-Periodic Functions Associated with the Jacobi-Dunkl Operator on R
2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 34K99, 44A15, 44A35, 42A75, 42A63Using a convolution structure on the real line associated with the Jacobi-Dunkl differential-difference operator Îα,ÎČ given by:
Îα,ÎČf(x) = f'(x) + ((2α + 1) coth x + (2ÎČ + 1) tanh x) { ( f(x) â f(âx) ) / 2 }, α â„ ÎČ â„ â1/2
, we define mean-periodic functions associated with Îα,ÎČ. We characterize these functions as an expansion series intervening appropriate
elementary functions expressed in terms of the derivatives of the eigenfunction of Îα,ÎČ. Next, we deal with the Pompeiu type problem and convolution equations for this operator
A comparative study of high-field diamagnetic fluctuations in deoxygenated YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and polycrystalline (Bi-Pb)2Sr2Ca3O(10)
We studied three single crystals of YBa2Cu3O{7-x} with Tc= 62.5, 52, and 41
K, and a textured specimen of (Bi-Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 with Tc=108 K, for H//c
axis. The reversible data were interpreted in terms of 2D lowest-Landau-level
fluctuation theory. The data were fit well by the 2D LLL expression for
magnetization obtained by Tesanovic etal., producing reasonable values of kappa
but larger values of dHc2/dT. Universality was studied by obtaining a
simultaneous scaling of Y123 data and Bi2223. An expression for the 2D x-axis
LLL scaling factor used to obtain the simultaneous scaling was extracted from
theory, and compared with the experimental values. The comparison between the
values of the x-axis produced a deviation of 40% which suggests that the
hypothesis of universality of the 2D-LLL fluctuations is not supported by the
studied samples. We finaly observe that Y123 magnetization data for
temperatures above obbey a universal scaling obtained for the diamagnetic
fluctuation magnetization from a theory considering non-local field effects.
The same scaling was not obbeyed by the corresponding magnetization calculated
from the two-dimensional lowest-Landau-level theory.Comment: 7 pages 5 figures, accept in Journ. Low Temp. Phy

Current practices of Saudi corporate governance: A case for reform
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University. One of the most debated issues is that of corporate governance. The topic has been investigated by scholars from several scientific fields including the legal. Indeed, corporate governance has been examined by a great number of law scholars, with particular regards to the improvement of various aspects. For example, effective corporate governance focuses on protecting and advancing aspects related to shareholdersâ rights, the board of directors and corporationsâ internal and external audit systems. The main objective of this research is to suggest reformation to the Saudi corporate governance framework in order to achieve satisfactory corporate governance practices. The second purpose of the research is to investigate the current practices involved in Saudi corporate governance arrangements. The final aim is to determine how a Saudi corporate governance framework would most benefit corporate governance from the Islamic perspective. This study intends to provide a regulatory analysis to influence those regulations that should be implemented to adjust corporate governance practices as they affect the Saudi capital market. The researcher found that Saudi corporate governance has been promulgated in accordance with principles of on-going international corporate governance. Alternatively, the Islamic perspective on corporate governance has been debated more recently, as an idea that needs to be progressed in order to provide associated benefits to the corporate governance framework in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, Saudi corporate governance provisions can be seen as based largely on positive man-made laws. The researcher further discovered that Saudi corporate governance as an institutional framework is divided between several institutions, whether internal or external, which might result in some ambiguity when it comes to implementing good corporate governance practices. However, the research results revealed that Saudi corporate governance provisions have to be reformed in accordance with popular worldwide corporate governance principles, namely the UK Corporate Governance Code, the UK Companies Act and the OECD principles of corporate governance produced
Security Tradeoffs in Rate Splitting Multiple Access: Optimal Signal Splitting vs Revealing
This paper considers the secrecy performance of rate splitting (RS) scheme in multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. The split of the users' messages into common and private parts can enhance the sum-rate of the communication systems. However, this split of the messages reveals part of the users' messages making them prone to eavesdropping. Thus, to consider the tradeoff between the sum-rate and the secrecy of RS, new analytical expressions for the ergodic sum-rate and ergodic secrecy rate are derived. Then, based on the analytical expressions of the ergodic rates, novel power allocation strategy that maximizes the sum-rate subject to a target secrecy rate is proposed and investigated. Our Monte Carlo simulations show a close match with our theoretical derivations. They also reveal that, by tuning the portion of the split signals, our power allocation approach provides a scalable tradeoff between sum-rate benefits and secrecy
An infinite plate with a curvilinear hole having three poles with complex parameters
This paper covered the study of the boundary value problem for isotropic homogeneous perforated infinite elastic media. For this, we considered the problem of a thin infinite plate of specific thickness with a curvilinear hole where the origin lie outside the hole is conformally mapped outside a unit circle by means of a specific rational mapping . The complex variable method has been applied and it transforms the problem to the integrodifferential equation with Cauchy kernel that can be solved to find two complex potential functions which called Gaursat functions. Many special cases are discussed and established of these functions .Also, many applications and examples are considered. Moreover the components of stress , in each application , are computed
